Emergency shower is an effective first aid to the eye

In any manufacturing unit, workers are prone to sustain injury either due to negligence on their part or due to faulty machinery. Whatever the cause of injury, it is obligatory on the part of the employer to install appropriate numbers of first aid boxes.  On the other hand, there could also be instances of employees getting injured in the eye. This can happen either because of splash of some chemicals or some foreign particle.  To meet such an eventuality, in addition to the first aid boxes, the employer should provide enough Emergency Showers and Eyewash Stations.

·        Emergency eye wash is available in three designs, namely plumbed, portable and single use eyewash bottles. The plumbed eye wash is a fixed variety which is connected to the water pipe. The portable variety will have storage of water enough for about 15 minutes of continuous usage. The single use eyewash stations are available with varying water storing capacity.

·        The emergency stations should be located at a prominent place. The location of emergency eyewash stations should be marked with very bright colors so that it should be easy for the employee to locate the wash station. The employer should ensure that the workers should have easy access to the emergency kit.

·        In some cases even oil spill can cause injury to the workforce. It is for this reason many of the manufacturers have introduced oil spill kit, which is found to be a very useful tool to regulate the damages caused by spillage of oil. This type of kit helps in regulating the oil leak and also cleaning the area where the leakage has occurred.  Proper management of the oil spill kit can also help in effective environmental management.

·        The employer should ensure the emergency eyewash stations are as per the standards fixed by the federal government. The employer should install an appropriate number of emergency showers after carefully evaluating the number of workers, type of manufacturing process and such other aspects. Further, the employer should make periodical inspection of the emergency showers so as to ensure they are in perfect working condition.

Training the staff:

In addition to these, the employer should make arrangements to train the staff which uses such exclusive emergency tools. The emergency shower is a very useful tool to contain the damage caused to the eyes of the employees.
